"I am an outgoing people person who enjoys living life and strives to discover my full potential in all endeavors. I have an active schedule with personal training appointments, group fitness classes, gym instruction and keeping up my own vigorous fitness training.
I have worked as a kayaking guide, instructor and coach at Waimarino Kayak and Adventure Park and currently am instructing martial arts at the Otumoetai Kiaido Ryu Martial Arts Dojo.
Over the past three years I have been employed by the Yellow Pages Group in Tauranga. Starting as an internal sales representative, through my development at Yellow I was promoted to external sales and promoted once again to specialise in the digital media sales channel. I enjoy sales as I treat it like teaching and use this approach to build rapport with businesses, demonstrate the value of Yellow’s products, and finally help them connect with their target audience. I have chosen to change direction from marketing and sales to focus more of my time and energy on studying the human body, the human potential, fitness training and sports as well as develop and enhance my teaching skills. I believe the BOP Polytechnic sports and recreation pathway offers me a great opportunity to achieve my goals.
More on my background…
In the year of 2003 I started studying tourism and travel at the Bay of Plenty Polytechnic. At the end of 2004, I graduated completing a diploma in tourism majoring in tourism management and a diploma in business management. I also was honoured the top student award for the tourism management major.
In 2005 I started working at Waimarino Ltd. I became involved in instructing and coaching kayaking skills all of which I learnt on the job. I also gained experience facilitating large groups that comprised from many different demographic backgrounds. Over the period of two years I became more involved with the management of the business. This included staff management, marketing, sales, establishing and maintaining databases, using office systems and software, co-ordinating client programmes and being involved in key business decisions. Due to my commitment and the large number of trainees’ I was coaching, in 2006 I was accepted and completed three coaching clinics related to the sport Canoe Slalom. The clinics were funded by a grant received from the New Zealand Olympic Committee. They were run by world class Canoe Slalom coaches and athletes. The clinics were a great opportunity for me to extend my knowledge base and I feel they gave me many interchangeable coaching and teaching techniques.
Early 2007 I was employed to work for a fixed term period as a tutor for the Bay of Plenty Polytechnic, Business School. The unit standards I facilitated were; 18222 which is related to the development and marketing of group tours, 18225 which is related to customer databases and Unit 61 which is related to selling on a consultancy basis. I took great pleasure in teaching these units as I enjoy working with people and feel this was a great opportunity for me to experience teaching in a classroom environment.
During and after the period I was tutoring for the Polytechnic I also completed module one, of the certificate in tertiary teaching, the beginners guide to tertiary education through the Bay of Plenty Polytechnic. This involved many aspects of adult teaching, from the organisation and planning through to the presentation and management of lessons.
I have been training in Kiaido Ryu Martial Arts since mid 2007 and was graded to Shodan (1st Degree Black Belt) in July 2010. Since my grading I have completed my instructor’s certificate with Kiaido Ryu and continue to train and instruct at the Otumoetai Dojo. I live the Martial Arts and am focused on continually developing my skills, knowledge and ability to advance in my journey to self mastery.
I have a passion for my training and wish to share this with others. I look forward to studying sports and recreations with the Bay of Plenty Polytechnic and see this opportunity as a big stepping stone for my future career and on my journey of self discovery and self mastery.
